The Town of Waxhaw will hold an artwork dedication ceremony on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 10am to commemorate the downtown train derailment of July 8, 2010. The ceremony will take place on West North Main Street close to Jackson Street along the railroad tracks.
The nearly 3000 pound steel, wood and plastic sculpture created by veteran Waxhaw artist Tom Risser and aptly named “Getting Back on Track”, honors the true spirit of cooperation displayed by the Waxhaw community during this time of crisis. In the words of Mr. Risser, “My inspiration was our Waxhaw community taking a bad situation and coming together to make it better. I was inspired by the Town and thrilled to help my community” |
The steel silhouettes represent the citizens, fire fighters, public service employees, police, train representatives, emergency workers, town staff and business owners who gave freely of their time and without complaint.
Participants in the program will include: Mayor Daune Gardner, Town Manager Michael McLaurin, Jason Loseke from the Waxhaw Beautification Committee and artist Tom Risser.
Light refreshments will follow the ceremony. The rain date is August 7, 2011 at 3pm.
