So Waxhaw, a new Mayor
...or keep the incumbent?

Waxhaw, NC, August 5th, 2011
by John Tiley

It will soon be time once again to elect Waxhaw's next Mayor. This time around I understand we have three people in the running. First of all, Daune Gardner will be running as the incumbent. Gary Underwood, our past Mayor is making a come-back bid and newcomer Lisa Thornton is on the scene as well. It is going to be interesting to see how this all develops. Between now and election day we have plenty of time for all kinds of shenanigans to transpire. To the right is an excerpt from an introductory article Lisa Thornton wrote. Her entire article was published in the Union County Weekly and is also available to be read on her face book page (click here).

Lisa Thornton
for Mayor of Waxhaw

I believe the citizens of Waxhaw want a Mayor who listens to its citizens. As mayor, my job would be to serve you, the residents of Waxhaw, and to make our town the best it can be! I am conservative and certainly believe we need less government, not more government. I believe we have many opportunities to make Waxhaw better. I look forward to meeting more of our citizens in the weeks ahead and listening to their concerns. I also look forward to sharing my vision for a better Waxhaw!

May the games begin! And as always, reader comments are welcome.

Town of Waxhaw to Dedicate Art Work
To Commemorate Train Derailment

Waxhaw, NC, August 4, 2011

The Town of Waxhaw will hold an artwork dedication ceremony on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 10am to commemorate the downtown train derailment of July 8, 2010. The ceremony will take place on West North Main Street close to Jackson Street along the railroad tracks.

The nearly 3000 pound steel, wood and plastic sculpture created by veteran Waxhaw artist Tom Risser and aptly named “Getting Back on Track”, honors the true spirit of cooperation displayed by the Waxhaw community during this time of crisis. In the words of Mr. Risser, “My inspiration was our Waxhaw community taking a bad situation and coming together to make it better. I was inspired by the Town and thrilled to help my community”

The steel silhouettes represent the citizens, fire fighters, public service employees, police, train representatives, emergency workers, town staff and business owners who gave freely of their time and without complaint.

Participants in the program will include: Mayor Daune Gardner, Town Manager Michael McLaurin, Jason Loseke from the Waxhaw Beautification Committee and artist Tom Risser.

Light refreshments will follow the ceremony. The rain date is August 7, 2011 at 3pm.
